How to Choose a Preschool in Electronic City

Most parents visit three or four preschools before deciding. By the third visit they all start to blur together: bright walls, smiling staff, a folder of worksheets handed over at the door.

Here is what we would look at, if we were the ones visiting.

Watch the children, not the classroom

A room can be tidied for a tour. Children cannot be.

Ask to observe during a normal working morning rather than after hours. Then spend five quiet minutes just watching. You are looking for children who are absorbed: a child who has chosen something, settled into it, and is not glancing up to check whether an adult approves.

If most children are waiting to be told what to do next, that tells you how the day usually runs.

Get down to child height

Crouch to your child's eye level in the middle of the room and look around.

• Can they reach the materials without asking an adult?
• Is there a low shelf, a small jug, a step to the basin?
• Is there anything beautiful at that height, or is the decoration all up at adult eye level?

A room designed at a child's reach is a room that expects the child to be capable. That single design choice shapes everything else.

Ask what happens when a child struggles

This is the most revealing question you can ask, and it is rarely on anyone's list.

The answer tells you whether the adults rush in to fix things, or whether they have the patience to let a child work at the edge of their ability. Struggle that a child chooses (pouring water and spilling it, buttoning and failing, trying again) is not a problem to be solved. It is the entire point.

A child who is helped too quickly learns that difficulty means someone else takes over.

Practical questions worth asking

• How many children per adult? Ask for the real number on a normal day, not the brochure ratio.
• How long is the uninterrupted work period? Frequent transitions make deep concentration impossible.
• How do you handle settling in? A thoughtful school will have a gradual plan, not a drop-and-go policy.
• What does a difficult morning look like? Every school has them. You want honesty, not a sales pitch.
• Can I see where they eat, wash, and use the toilet? These spaces reveal the school's real standards.

Questions that matter less than you think

Parents often lead with these, and they rarely predict whether a child will thrive:

• Does it look impressive? Marble floors and a big campus do not teach your child anything.
• How early do they teach reading and writing? Pushing formal academics early tends to buy a short-lived head start at the cost of genuine interest.
• How many worksheets come home? Paper going home is reassuring for adults. It is a poor measure of what a two-year-old actually did that morning.

On location: a practical note for Electronic City

Traffic here is real, and a commute that works in June may not work in October. Before you commit, drive the route at the actual drop-off time on a weekday. Twenty minutes of stop-start traffic each way is a lot to ask of a two-year-old, and it is the single most common reason families move a child mid-year.

A quieter, closer school your child reaches calmly usually beats a better-marketed one across the city.

The one thing to trust

After the tour, notice how you felt in the room. Was it calm? Were the adults speaking to children the way you would want someone to speak to yours?

You will forget the fee structure. You will remember the atmosphere.
